The Seth Bernsen '95 Memorial Fund
Seth was passionate about Computer Science and Maker Spaces. Prior to his passing in 2021, he shared ideas about ways that gifts in his memory could further those passions and make them accessible for more people. Your memorial donation to Grinnell College funds valuable experiences for current students and the local community.

About the Fund
The Seth Bernsen Memorial Fund supports several programs that encourage optimism and curiousity in the next generation of students.
Computer Science
Code Club
Code Club is a free drop-in program at the Drake Community Library for all students in grades 3-8. The library provides snacks and laptops and Grinnell College students provide the curriculum and staffing. Multiple Grinnell College students volunteer their time weekly to teach local students about computer science and guide them through fun activities with the goal of fostering a little bit of learning and a lot of confidence in their computing abilities.
Computing Peers United
Computing Peers United is a program started by the computer science majors at Grinnell to support other computer science majors. Students can sign up to be either a mentor or a mentee. Then they are matched by interest, identity, future plans, etc. and meet regularly to talk about topics as varied as navigating the department to internship ideas to where to live off-campus. The computer science department encourages these meetings by providing a $10 coupon to the Spencer Grill, should they choose to meet over coffee or snacks.
Maker Spaces
Grinnell Maker Lab
Funds will support equipment and programming for students in connection with the Grinnell Maker Lab . The Maker Lab is a space with a diverse set of tools that enable individuals and groups to exercise their creativity, practice a craft, or prototype a product. The space offers training and workshops on design and fabrication (digital, woodwork, and metalwork), supports co-curricular student maker groups, and supports faculty curricular interests in the arts and sciences
The lab is a collaboration between the Wilson Center and
the Grinnell Area Arts Council. It brings diverse members of
the college and community together for integrative
project-based and experiential learning through design and
fabrication. In addition to learning specific technical
skills, it enhances the type of creativity, critical thinking,
integrative learning, and teamwork that are at the core of the
liberal arts, and that serve as critical skills in innovation
and leadership.
Experiential Learning
One of Seth's favorite places was Ax-Man Surplus in the Twin Cities, MN. One potential use of memorial funds will be a road trip to Ax-Man and project for current students, to spark their sense of curiosity and wonder.

Your Gift in Any Amount Makes an Impact
If you knew Seth and would have gone out to brunch with him,
the $20 you would have spent will help to pay for 2 coffee
cards to inspire a computer science mentor and mentee to
connect, learn from each other and ask each other questions...
just like Seth would.
If you knew Seth and would
have traveled to see him or go on an adventure with him
somewhere in the world, the money you would have spent on a
plane ticket, food & lodging can now enable an entire car
load of students to have an adventure together, learning from
each other, laughing together, questioning each other while
they road trip to a maker store together.
If you
didn't know Seth, but love optimism, curiosity, science and
want to
help create more intellectually curious, can-do thinkers,
doers and leaders, we invite you to make a contribution of any size to Seth
Bernsen's Memorial fund. Seth's infectious curiosity and
genuine appreciation of people, knowledge and exploring
possibilities will live on through all of us and through the
activities and people who come in contact with the activities
supported by the Seth Bernsen Memorial Fund.
On behalf of the students and communities who will
benefit, we, his family and friends, thank you for your
support!
